The Artist Ally Thompson

Sadly, my brother the artist Ally Thompson died on 31st January 2016, aged 60. He was a formative and fundamental creative influence on me. A good deal of his work can be seen at the website I created for him www.glasgowsurrealist.com but the extent and range of his output is such that I have decided to create a small separate gallery below of what I believe are some of the very best of his paintings and drawings. Hopefully this will offer people a good overview and starting point for learning about an artist highly respected in his native Glasgow and throughout the world, particularly France and Europe where his work is held in countless private collections and galleries. The obituary of Ally Thompson can be read in The Herald newspaper here, and in The Scotsman here.

The Lillie Art Gallery in Milngavie, Glasgow, will stage a major retrospective exhibition of Ally Thompson’s life and work, to run from 12th January 2019 to 21st February 2019. There will be something in the region of 75 paintings, drawings and collages on show, along with sketchbooks and photographs and commentary recounting his extraordinary life.
